Ten-year-old Gavin Maxwell, second from right, is awarded $150 for his time officiating on the field for the Sheridan Rec District’s Little Guy Football season during the championship game Tuesday at Dan Madia Field. From left, Owen Mullinax, Shane Parker, Steve Marosok and Richard Wright. At age 1 Maxwell was diagnosed with alpha one antitrypsin deficiency. He had undergone a life-saving liver transplant last March but was not allowed to play contact sports this year. Maxwell’s parents reached out to the Sheridan Rec District to see if he could get involved with the games, they responded by making him a game official. “Shane Parker took Gavin under his wing and taught him how to ref,” Gavin’s mother Shay Maxwell said, “He really likes to throw the flag at his friends.” Maxwell helped the officials with Little Guy Football for the entire season. The Maxwells were surprised by the generous gift that the Rec District presented Gavin in recognition for his time officiating. Justin Sheely / The Sheridan Press.
